Nakhal Fort in the wilayat of Nakhal, South Al Batinah Governorate, standing on its rocky outcrop exactly as it does: the towers lead the line, the walls follow the shape of the rock, and behind them the Hajar mountains. In the foreground the falaj stream and the date palm groves — the reason the site became a fort site in the first place.
From the right of the painting to the left, two camel caravans pass, and a herd of goats comes down to the water to drink. "The Journey" is that crossing: the fort fixed for centuries, and people moving past it.
Dr Saud Al Hunaini completed it in oil on canvas in 2015 at 60 × 100 cm, with close realist work: the fort’s windows and balconies painted one by one, and the reflection in the water built layer over layer until it settled.
